How to tie a tie

Learn how to tie a tie for any occasion with our handy step-by-step
guides to the three most popular tie knots.

  • STEP 1

Start with the wide end of the tie hanging
around 12 inches below the narrow end.
Cross the wide end over the narrow then loop up
through the space between the tie and shirt collar.

  • STEP 2

Take the wide end again and this time
wrap it behind the narrow end -
taking it from right to left.

  • STEP 3

Grab the wide end now and bring
it to the front, taking it over,
the loop you've made between the
    tie and your shirt collar.

  • STEP 4

Wrap the tie's wide end around
the narrow end again, and then push it
up through the loop once more.

  • STEP 5

Carefully slip the wide end of the tie
    through the knot you've made.
Tighten it up and make sure it's central.

  • STEP 1

Throw the tie around your neck ensuring
the wider end is on your right.
Let it fall around 10 inches lower than the
    narrow end on your left.

  • STEP 2

    Cross the wide end over
    the narrow end and cross
    it again underneath.

  • STEP 3

    Cross the wide end over
    the narrow end again,
so it's pointing to the left.

  • STEP 4

Carefully holding the knot you've made,
slip the wide end of the tie
    down through the knot.
Tighten up and make sure it’s central.

  • STEP 1

Place the tie around your neck with the wide end
hanging about 12 inches lower than the thinner end.
Take the wide end and cross it over the
    narrower end.

  • STEP 2

Wrap the wider end around the narrow end before
pushing it up through the loop you've just made.
Bring it back down, making sure that the narrower
end is now underneath the wide end.

  • STEP 3

Take the wide end and wrap it round to the
front and back up through the loop once more.
Pull it gently all the way through the loop.

  • STEP 4

Tighten up the knot, then holding on to the
narrow end, push the knot up to the
desired point next to your shirt collar.
